About the Department
The Technical Services and Cataloging Department is the backbone of the library's organizational infrastructure. Our skilled catalogers ensure that every item in our collection is properly described, classified, and made discoverable through our online catalog system.
Cataloging Standards
We adhere to international standards including:
- MARC21: Machine-Readable Cataloging format for bibliographic records
- Dewey Decimal Classification: For subject organization
- Library of Congress Subject Headings: For consistent subject access
- RDA: Resource Description and Access guidelines
- Somali Extensions: Adaptations for local language and cultural materials
Digital Catalog
Our online public access catalog (OPAC) provides 24/7 access to our collections, allowing users to search, browse, and request materials from anywhere in the world. The catalog contains over 25,000 bibliographic records and is continuously updated.
Preservation Lab
The department operates a state-of-the-art preservation laboratory where damaged materials are repaired and fragile items are stabilized using archival-quality materials and techniques.
