Technical Services & Cataloging

The Technical Services Department organizes and prepares materials for public access through professional cataloging, classification, and preservation services.

About the Department

The Technical Services and Cataloging Department is the backbone of the library's organizational infrastructure. Our skilled catalogers ensure that every item in our collection is properly described, classified, and made discoverable through our online catalog system.

Cataloging Standards

We adhere to international standards including:

  • MARC21: Machine-Readable Cataloging format for bibliographic records
  • Dewey Decimal Classification: For subject organization
  • Library of Congress Subject Headings: For consistent subject access
  • RDA: Resource Description and Access guidelines
  • Somali Extensions: Adaptations for local language and cultural materials

Our online public access catalog (OPAC) provides 24/7 access to our collections, allowing users to search, browse, and request materials from anywhere in the world. The catalog contains over 25,000 bibliographic records and is continuously updated.
